OMK ready to ‘Purple Up’ to support military families

STILLWATER, Okla. – While most people associate the color green with the Oklahoma 4-H program, the color purple will be the focus on April 13.
April marks the nation’s “Month of the Military Child,” and April 13 has been designated as “Purple Up! For Military Kids” day.
Pat McNally, director of the Oklahoma 4-H Operation: Military Kids (OMK), and Extension specialist in the State 4-H Office, said this is a great time to honor youth around the country who are impacted by military deployment. OMK, which was initiated in 2005, is part of the Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development Program, which is part of the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.
“OMK is joining forces with all other Operation: Military Kids programs across the country to raise awareness and show support for these children and their families and let them know how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make when their family members are deployed,” McNally said. “Through this effort we encourage groups, organizations and individuals all across Oklahoma to wear purple as a visible way to support and thank military families. A sea of purple in every Oklahoma community would provide a wonderful visual for the thousands of military families.”
Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military and combines Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue.
“Sometimes these children may feel like they’re alone and no one understands what they are going through. We’re hoping that various organizations, including 4-H clubs, will host events in their communities that focus on military youth,” she said. “We’d like for communities that participate to send us photos to post on the Oklahoma 4-H OMK website.”

“We’re really excited about this opportunity to show support to our military families. Citizenship has long been a part of the Oklahoma 4-H program and this is yet another opportunity for our club members to get involved and help those in their communities,” McNally said.

(Stillwater, OK) This month and throughout the year, Payne County Youth Services, Inc. encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making Payne County a better and safer place for children, youth and families. By ensuring that youth have supportive and caring people they can turn to, we can improve their quality of life.
Young people perform better in all areas of their lives when they have a supportive relationship with a caring adult. For at-risk youth, volunteer mentors can be an especially positive influence that helps them make good decisions, believe in their own strengths, and excel in school. Safe Place agencies and sites can connect youth to positive supportive caring adults and help influence youth when they are in crisis and need someone to talk to. Safe Place agencies can also connect youth to long term mentoring in their community which research has shown that youth with mentors are less likely to engage in at risk behaviors. Communities across the country search for ways to keep youth safe and many have established Safe Place as a community collaboration making help readily available. Safe Place designates businesses, community buildings and mobile units as Safe Place sites that prominently display the Safe Place logo. Any youth in crisis can walk in and a trained representative will come to meet with them and together they will begin to determine what kind of help is needed. Safe Place connects children and their families with the supportive resources they need. In Payne County, Safe Place is operated by Payne County Youth Services, Inc.

The Safe Place sites display the Safe Place sign and employees are trained and prepared to assist any youth needing help. In Payne County, an estimated 2 to 4 youth receive help from the Safe Place program each month.
This national initiative operates in 40 states that serve over 1528 communities across the country. Safe Place has helped over 265,000 young people who have gone to a Safe Place and asked for help or contacted the youth serving agency after they learned about the program at school.
