Creating Opportunities for Responsible Development
The Service-Learning Volunteer Center is creatively recognizing our outstanding OSU Cowboy volunteers as they graduate.
Upon graduation, undergraduates who have served 400 hours of community service (40 through the SLVC) qualify for an honorary orange cord, which symbolizes their commitment to service. This cord will be worn during graduation. Graduate students qualify if they’ve served 300 hours, 30 of which are through the SLVC.*
Dr. Lee Bird, Vice President for Student Affairs has paired up with the SLVC to make a commitment to celebrating our student volunteers.
OSU students are well-known for their commitment to service. As a result, OSU has consistently been recognized as a Carnegie Select Institution for several years. OSU Student Affairs chose to recognize these students with honorary orange cords, which symbolize their dedication to service and to success.
*Note: The required hours through the SLVC count for students who began at OSU during fall 2009. Required SLVC hours are not applicable for current graduating students.
What’s with the CORD?
Orange cords were selected for the following reasons:
- Represent OSU pride – Wearing orange is a symbol of our dedication to OSU both now as students and as alumni.
- Connection to each other and to the community – Cords represent the bonds that students share with each other and with the community. Both students and community members are vital to each others’ success.
- Intertwinement of service and success – The CORD’s intertwining strands represent how service and success are inseparably related. Students must serve to be successful, both professionally and personally.
The CORD program demonstrates OSU students’ commitment to service and OSU’s commitment to support these student leaders.
How to Apply & Deadlines
- Join the Service-Learning Volunteer Center on Campus Link.
- Record your service hours.* You’ll see the Service Hours button on the left sidebar after your membership is approved.
- Fill out the CORD application on the SLVC page on Campus Link during the semester that you’re graduating. Information about the forms will be updated for each semester.
* Graduating soon? You can backlog your service hours up to the day that you enrolled as an OSU student. Those hours still count!
