International Service-Learning Opportunity in Lebanon

Please note: Since this is the K-12 S-L listserv, please note that only youth who are 18-30, graduating seniors, university students, or university graduates are eligible. Of course, that means that K-12 teachers and administrators who are 18-30 would be most welcome!

The Learning to CARE Institute in Lebanon is organizing the Heritage Volunteer Program, a very special three week eco-voluntour program (June 25th through July 16th) for youth (18-30) that will give participants an inside view of Lebanon’s social, historical, and environmental heritage. While the program will have a number of features especially designed for youth from Lebanese emigrant communities abroad, it is also open to youth living in Lebanon and youth without any Lebanese heritage. All participants must be entering or current university students or university graduates.

Participants will learn about Lebanese culture and history, gain a better understanding of the Lebanese migration experience, see many different areas of the country, and make their own contribution to Lebanese society. Participants will stay in three different base camps for a week each, and have the chance to get to know the three major geographic and cultural components of Lebanon – the mountains with their traditional villages, the central valley that is the agricultural heartland of Lebanon, and the urban coastline.

This is an ideal program for those who want to complete university service-learning requirements since it incorporates all the elements of quality service-learning: integrated learning, genuine service, collaboration, youth voice, civic responsibility, evaluation, and reflection.While at each base camp, participants will engage in at least 15 hours of structured learning for a total of at least 45 hours for the whole program. There will also be at least 15 hours of volunteering while at each base camp, for a total of at least 45 hours for the program. And from each base camp the group will go on tours of historical, cultural, and natural sites in that area.

National Literacy Action Week! Get involved!


SCALE, the Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education, is holding National Literacy Action Week (NLAW) from January 30th through February 5th, 2012.

NLAW is a nationwide event where campus literacy programs join together to raise awareness about literacy and create change on their campuses and in their communities.

Paid Internship Opportunity!


The Wediko Summer Program is in the process of recruiting and hiring graduate and undergraduate students for their paid summer internship.

At Wediko Children’s Services, they are already recruiting students from diverse backgrounds and fields to be a part of a paid internship opportunity for Summer 2011. The Wediko Summer Program is a short term residential treatment program that serves approximately 150 children with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Each year, they hire a group of dedicated, ambitious, and talented individuals to make the program meaningful and successful for each child.

They offer a unique opportunity for students in a variety of majors to teach art, athletics, theatre, mountain biking, fishing, and other water based activities. There is also an opportunity for students who are interested in teaching in the classroom and direct care positions.

SIFE USA Program Manager opening


SIFE USA currently has a Program Manager position available.  This position will be responsible for day-to-day program implementation of the SIFE USA Program in a US territory and requires extensive travel.

  • Manage, evaluate, and foster the progress of active SIFE teams on 80-130 campuses and participate in face-to-face, on-campus training programs, along with other communications and initiatives as needed, to help SIFE teams and faculty to continuously improve the quality of their program.
  • Increase the number of active SIFE students within the assigned geographic region.
  • Interface with university deans, administrators, and other leaders as needed to support local SIFE teams.
  • Prepare periodic status reports of campus visits and key statistical data.
  • Manage SIFE team competitions as assigned.
  • Identify prospective college and university participants and implement a recruitment strategy to gain support for starting a SIFE team from the administrators, faculty and students at these institutions.
  • Manage territory travel budget.
  • Prepares annual report summary on territory activities.
  • Position is a full-time traveling role.

Key Characteristics and Experience:

  • Passion for and understanding of SIFE; participated in some aspect of SIFE.
  • Results-driven individual able to give evidence of establishing goals, planning and follow-up skills, and achieving goals.
  • Willingness to work from the SIFE USA office in the SIFE World Headquarters located in Springfield, MO.

Library of Congress Touring Museum Exhibit


The Stillwater Public Library needs volunteers for the Library of Congress Touring Museum Exhibit, which is June 7-8.

Volunteers will work a two hour shift…

  • Greeting the public and welcoming people to the exhibit
  • Signing up people for entry into the exhibit
  • Escorting children’s groups from the staging area to the museum entry

The library is looking for 16 volunteers to help out.

We are recruiting outstanding undergraduates and graduate students as summer interns to collaborate on the boldest nonprofit initiative we know.

We are looking for passionate, energetic students with exceptional skills to take initiative on a range of projects. This is an outstanding leadership opportunity in an innovative start-up nonprofit organization.

Here is the problem we are tackling:  K-12 schools in this country do not have enough resources to let children explore their potential and excel.  Books, computers, art supplies, musical instruments, science equipment, sports equipment, and even paper for computers and printers are all in desperately short supply.

Our Approach:  ClassWish.org, an exciting new nonprofit, uses modern business practices and the latest marketing techniques to help 125,000 schools serving 56 million kids, inform, inspire and engage supporters. Teachers visit the site to create Wish Lists of the resources they need.  People in the community can see exactly what is needed and contribute to help.

  • marketing to particular audiences, such as businesses, bloggers, press, educators, moms, religious organizations, civic organizations, unions, nonprofits, authors, soap operas, magazine readers, teens and celebrities
  • marketing around particular school subjects, such as science, music, art, reading  and sports
  • marketing around particular promotions (such as http://ClassWish.org/fido and http://ClassWish.org/books/124)
  • creating and implementing social media campaigns
  • building and managing relationships with strategic partners such as http://EdRover.com
  • building and leading a national network of volunteers
  • enhancing the website
  • creating graphics and promotional materials

You will take leadership on projects and work with other highly motivated interns, established professionals, and directly with our co-founder.

Is this a business or a nonprofit?

ClassWish is a nonprofit, but we use the latest techniques from the business world to make a leveraged, scalable and financially-self sustaining difference in the lives of tens of millions of children.

Daniel Burnham, the great Chicago architect, said “Make no little plans; they have not the power to stir men’s souls.”  (Nor women’s, we hasten to add).  Little plans also do not have the power to provide a better education to 56 million kids who deserve more than they are getting today.  We face a crushing need in schools, have a solid plan to address it, and with your help, we intend to grow this very large and very fast.

Where are you located?

We are in Manhattan, conveniently located right across from Madison Square Garden.  We will also hire interns to work remotely from other cities.

What skills and experience are you looking for? 

We seek a wide range of skills: graphic designers, videographers, writers, researchers, creative thinkers, analytical sorts, community organizers, social media stars, people with great communication skills, MBA students, and more.

Still Time to Apply to IPSL Summer Service Programs


Dear Colleagues:

While Summer Deadlines for IPSL Study Abroad and Service-Learning Programs are fast approaching, we are still accepting applications and there is still space in most of our programs.

If you have students who may be just deciding to experience an international study and volunteer program, have them check out the IPSL website at http://www.ipsl.org/programs/where-we-go for all our program details.

Our last deadlines are June 8th for Cusco, Peru and June 10th for Montpellier, France. Guayaquil, Quito, Kolkata, Valladolid and Chiang Mai have earlier deadlines.

There is an easy online application at http://www.ipsl.org/apply and best of all, most programs do not require a visa! Summer programs are an ideal way for students to “get their feet wet” in international study and volunteer service without a lengthy time commitment or huge expense. And, it is a great way to practice another language, augment your studies with interesting courses, and gain valuable work skills by volunteering in a non-profit abroad.

Stillwater Public Library Needs Volunteers this Weekend


The Stillwater Public Library (1107 S. Duck Street) needs volunteers this weekend to help box up books for a shipment this coming Tuesday. After boxing up the boxes, volunteers will help load them on a truck.

Volunteering times are:

  • Sunday, April 17 from 4-6 pm
  • Monday, April 18 from 3-6 pm
